#6 Western Involvement

6.  Do you think that Western nations, such as Great Britain, France, Germany, and the U.S. should respond differently to atrocities around the world today? Should they have done more? Why?

I believe that European countries and the U.S. should respond differently. To start, we should be responding by providing aid when necessary. We must not turn a blind eye to the atrocities that are being committed. The countries that hold the majority of the power and have an interest in the resources that Africa holds should  take part in trying to maintain the peace. If we hope to share a stake in the African countries then we should also work to maintain peace. We should use our superior military forces to try and reduce the brutality that is occurring. Furthermore, in the European countries took part in the brutality and it is their responsibility to try and fix what they broke.
While it is clear that we can not be the police power for the entire world, it is important that we still take care of everything we are trying to use, especially if we hold an interest in the resources there.
As humans, we are all equal and everyone deserves a chance to live a great life, so it is our responsibility to provide aid when we can and where we can.

  1. I would have liked to have seen some links to establish this as something other than an editorial. That being said, I agreed with your point which said that if you use it, take care of it. You didn't really give any examples or suggestions on how to help these countries though, which I would have liked to see.

    1. I'm sorry, I will embed links ASAP. I believe it is nearly impossible to give an accurate suggestion as to what we should do because it will very for each situation. For example, if there is a country being run by a ruthless dictator, we could very easily go in an assassinate the ruler. However, would we be the ones to deal with the possibly very negative repercussions of destroying their government (as terrible as it had been)?

    2. As we know from history, people can look like revolutionaries from one side and terrorists from another. This teaches us that we don't always know what's right. Thank you for seeing that there are consequences to our actions like this.

    3. In arguing intervention, I think you should be able to give suggestions, at least that brings up a discussion on where the line is drawn. With a dictator such as Hitler, how many lines would we cross?

    4. Intervention should be necessary in extreme cases. If another dictator such as Hitler was to rise to power again, teamwork of dominant nations would provide a sufficient force.

  2. I think you should have included more links. I agree with much of what you said especially about how we cannot be the police of the world, but I do think you should have included suggestions on what we can do. How about the UN's efforts? or encouraging more effort to be done. France has Medecin san Frontiers (Doctors without Borders) and we have Red Cross but what more can we provide?

  3. I agree with Nick. Some evidence would enhance your argument. Maybe cite some organizations that target crimes against humanity or extreme poverty (UNICEF or the World Court).
